Expedition 48 | Mobile App Design

Expedition 48 is the concept for my final thesis project at the Academy of Art. What you are about to view is the progress made up to my midpoint review at the end of the 2018 Fall Semester.

Expedition 48 is a mobile app for travel junkies and newbies alike. Expedition 48 provides the user with an interface that allows them to keep track of their traveling. The user is able to check-in to "verified" spots and earn badges to display on their user profile. The user can then take images and upload them with captions to keep track of where they have been and what they have done. But this is just the beginning.

The Who. The What. The Why.

Expedition 48 also acts as a road-trip guide. The user can input a start and end-point and Expedition 48 will give the user stops to stop at between the two points. Expedition 48 also allows the user to input a trip spending amount and will calculate stops based on that amount.

Why This?

I grew up in a family that loved to travel, but it was only ever by car. So we would always make pit-stops along the way. At these pit-stops I would always have to pick up a postcard or something to show where I have been. That notion sprouted this idea of a digital version of that. Expect this version also helps you plan your road-trip.

Another inspiration that helped this idea come to mind was a site called Roadtrippers. This site also helps the user plan road-trips, but in a more broad way and it doesn't offer the user a travel journal, just to save their road-trips. It basically just acts as a roadmap. I wanted more than this.

The Uniqueness Factor

Expedition 48 brings to the table something that other road-trip websites don't have. That's the idea behind the travel journal. As I've stated this interactive part of the mobile app will allow the user to keep track of where they have been by providing them with badges for different "verified" locations, badges based on miles traveled, that kind of thing. The user will also be able to keep a travel log that they can share road-trips they've been on, new locations, and even photos of their trips.

It is ultimately going to be this user input that will keep this site up-to-date with the most current things to do in a location or on the way to a location.

Position Statement

Expedition 48 is for both the avid travelers and the newbies who want to explore new places, while sharing it with others. Expedition 48 is a mobile app that provides the user with an interface that allows them to keep track of their traveling, while also allowing the user to plan their road-trips. Expedition 48 is different from other road-trip apps because it is providing the user with an interactive travel profile and journal that they can then share with others.

The Competitors

Target Audience

Primary Audience

The primary audience for Expedition 48 will be the 23-35 age group. This individuals love to travel, are somewhat fresh out of college, and do not have a family or job to hold them down.

Secondary Audience

The secondary audience for Expedition 48 will be older individuals, ages 45-65. These individuals are starting to become a little more tech savvy. They are starting to think about retiring or are retired. If they are not retired they are in a position in their job that they have vacation time to use. These individuals are also already sharing trips and such on Facebook, so the want to share is there.

Target Audience Research

  • Based on survey questions given, most individuals said that they would prefer having an app that provides a travel journal along with a road-trip guide.

  • It was found that the travel journal would be the main draw, with the road-trip planner being the secondary draw.

  • I also found an additional online forum of individuals discussing apps to use as a travel journal. There was no cohesive answer.

  • Travel blogs have stated that keeping a travel journal is one of the top things you should do while traveling. These travel journals are said to help you better remember your trips.

Kelsey's exposure to this project has been through the survey questions. She has also helped me bounce ideas around and brainstorm.

Kelsey's motivation to want to use Expedition 48 comes from being an avid traveler and journler. She loves to be able to journal and sketch about where she's been and what she's experienced. Kelsey has said though that she would love to be able to have a journal that fits in her pocket that would do all that she needs it too.

All in all, Kelsey wants a journal that she can bring everywhere that easily fits in her pocket. What better way to do that than a travel journal on her phone.

Thor Hegland, 25

Thor Hegland is a 25 year old male, who is currently living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is a graduate of South Dakota State University, with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Thor is currently employed as a Design Engineer at Spartan Motors.

Thor's exposure to this project has been through survey questions and just hearing me talk about it. He has a basic understanding of the idea behind Expedition 48 and has provided some insight as to what could be included in the travel journal aspect it.

Thor's motivation to want to use Expedition 48 comes from being a seasoned traveler, but also a foodie. He enjoys to use apps like UnTapped to track different beers he has tried. So he would like to be able to do the same with traveling. Thor doesn't want to just track where he has been. He would like to be able to use the travel journal as a way to keep track of places he's ate at and what foods he has tried as well. Thor says that the travel journal aspect would be good for doing that.

All in all, Thor wants a way to track where he has been because he would like to not only remember where he has been, but also where and what has has ate.

Arrin Weinkauf is a 32 year old female, who is currently living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She is a graduate of the University of Sioux Falls, with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Project Management. Arrin is currently employed as a Account Manager and Media Buyer at Ripple Marketing.

Arrin's exposure to this project has been from hearing me talk about it and through the survey questions.

Arrin's motivation to want to use Expedition 48 comes from wanting to share her travels on a platform other than Instagram. She wants to have her travel stories shared in a way that isn't over saturated with other sorts of images and content. She wants to be able to use a platform that is just for travel.

All in all, Arrin wants a way to share just her travel photos that isn't Instagram, since her personal life images are on her Instagram as well.

Project Scope

Ideally, Expedition 48 would be an app with a website companion that both function similarly, allowing the user to have both a mobile and desktop experience, while tracking their travels. Realistically, I can accomplish making Expedition 48 a working mobile app that the user can use to record their travels.
