Beneath the Surface of Words

Book Design · Cover Design · Print Design · Typography

They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover—but as a designer, I'm going to respectfully disagree.

For Sue Hegland's Beneath the Surface of Words, I designed a book cover that gave readers a first glimpse into the depth and emotion waiting inside. The goal was to create something visually compelling while staying true to the heart of the story.

Designing the First Impression

A book cover has a lot of work to do before a reader ever turns the first page. It needs to catch the eye, communicate a feeling, and hint at the story without giving too much away.

I brought together typography, imagery, and layout to create an exterior design that reflected the book's deeper themes while keeping the title and supporting information clear and readable.

The finished cover gives Beneath the Surface of Words a visual identity of its own—one designed to invite readers to look a little closer and discover what's beneath the surface.
